My name is Mel. Though I work in marketing and public relations for my main gig, photography has always been of interest to me. I didn’t start out as a photographer, but my love for it grew as I came to be the person who I am today. I never put two-and-two together when I would be snapping photos on the sidelines of my high school plays and ballet recitals – and then it dawned on me during my freshman year of college, when I decided to complete an elective course in photojournalism. A whole new passion developed from there.
I graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in journalism and public relations, with minors in theatre and dance. I stayed in school to obtain my master's degree in integrated marketing communications while working full-time (and part-time, with photography!).
I have worked with West Virginia University’s University Relations News & Photo department, The Charleston Daily Mail as a freelance photographer, The Daily Athenaeum as their head photographer/art director and have shot various freelance assignments. I have shot everything from football, soccer, gymnastics and basketball at West Virginia University, to weddings in Pittsburgh and all over West Virginia (and one in the Bahamas!), to infants and families, dance and theatre shows, country and rock concerts and much more.
As a creative, I feel as though I will always be craving to learn more; there is so much variety in this field, and so many talented people to learn from. I love it most when I'm shooting people, more than anything: couples, families, athletes, dancers... I love it all. I'm so lucky that I get to do this on the side of my full-time work.
